The National Center for Theater, Music and Folk Arts announces the launch of a playwriting competition in two main branches: children's theater and puppet theater, under the supervision of director Hisham Atwa, head of the theater sector.
Director Adel Hassan, head of the National Center for Theater, Music, and Folk Arts, stated that this competition comes within the framework of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to discover and nurture new talents, open creative horizons for young writers, and encourage them to venture into writing plays for children, as this is one of the most important tools for shaping awareness and building the Egyptian character from a young age. The character of King Tutankhamun was chosen as the central theme for the competing texts, which are to be approached from a creative perspective based on documented historical information, reflecting the grandeur of ancient Egyptian civilization and reintroducing it to new generations using contemporary artistic methods.
Submitted texts must not have previously won any other competitions, been published, or performed theatrically. They must be written in either Modern Standard Arabic or colloquial Arabic, and must not be adapted from any other creative medium. Each participant may submit only one text in one of the competition's two categories. The text must not exceed 60 A4 pages, typed in Times New Roman Bold font, size 14.
Submissions can be delivered in person to the center's headquarters at 9 Hassan Sabry Street, Zamalek, Cairo, during official working days, along with an electronic copy of the script. The submission period is from December 7, 2025, to January 31, 2026. Results will be announced in March 2026, and the awards ceremony will be held on March 27, 2026, coinciding with World Theatre Day.
The awards regulations stipulate that the two texts that win first place in each category will be produced by the Artistic House of Theater, within the production plan of the National Children's Theater and the Cairo Puppet Theater. The National Center for Theater, Music and Folk Arts will also publish the two winning texts in a special edition within its publications.
Director Adel Hassan added that this competition represents an important step in supporting theatrical creativity. It aims to revitalize playwriting for children and puppetry, and to open the door for a new generation of writers to develop fresh theatrical visions that resonate with the audience and strengthen national identity. He added that the Ministry of Culture, through this initiative, affirms its commitment to providing genuine opportunities for young creators and to activating the role of theater as an educational and intellectual tool that contributes to building the Egyptian individual.
The Egyptian Ministry of Culture invites all writers and creators of different ages and disciplines to participate in this competition and contribute to enriching theatrical content directed at children, in a way that reinforces the values of belonging and knowledge, and presents our historical symbols in a creative image befitting the greatness of Egypt and its history.
